Gambling as a Means of Entertainment

Gambling is a form of entertainment defined as the betting of money or a valuable item to win more money and/or other material goods. It can either be legal or illegal and some religions even condone gambling. At some point, most people indulge in at least a form of gambling.

Most governments assign agencies to regulate gambling. These regulating bodies team up with private organizations like hotels, and provide gambling facilities or casinos in certain areas of a hotel.

Gambling comes in many forms. Electronic forms of gambling are the lotteries, bingo, scratch-cards, and slot machines. Sporting events like horse racing, soccer matches, basketball, billiards, boxing matches, and cockfighting also incite gambling. Some private affairs can be organized into gambling assemblies, where parties bet on money through playing mahjong, bridge, poker, and other card games.

Other non-casino gambling games include: card games (Put, Piquet, Lansquenet, Basset, and Liar's poker), coin-tossing games (Two-up and Head and Tail), confidence tricks (Shell game and Three-card Monte), carnival games (Hanky Pank and The Razzle), and dice-based games (Mexico, Pig, Threes, Hazard, Passe-dix, Liar's dice, and Backgammon).

Yet most gambling aficionados converge in casinos. A sense of euphoria can be felt every time a gambler steps into the casino floor. In a casino floor, a wide array of games awaits the gambler. These include the slot machines, video poker, card tables, roulette tables, and bingo areas.

Some casino games include: Blackjack, Poker, Teen Patti, 3-card poker, Spanish 21, Baccarat, Caribbean Stud Poker, Craps, Casino war, Fan-Tan, Faro, Pachinko, Red Dog, Sic Bo, Roulette, and Pai Gow Poker and Tiles.

To make things more enjoyable, a casino also provides live entertainment and restaurants.

Gambling can also be conducted in areas other than hotels or private residences. Such activities can also occur in other public areas like the malls, restaurants, and public markets.

While gambling should be considered a form of recreation, there are some individuals who take a gambling a bit too seriously and make it their way of life, as their way to increase their income.

Such gambling habits can start out small, buoyed by the so-called "beginner's luck." However, these small habits become big. And mostly, the losses outweigh the gains. A person loses a small amount of money, and when that is not enough, the losses become big.

There is not enough money to lose and a person begins to lose material goods. Even businesses are lost in the process. Eventually, a person could lose everything through gambling.

While being an enjoyable and entertaining activity, gambling, if abused, can ruin a person's life. Thus, gamble in moderation and maintain balance in life, while indulging in a risky sort of recreation.
